With this 1957 Delvaux bag Marie Hallez perfectly captured a new kind of femineity - independent, more mobile and continuously and luckily growing ever more confident.
The design of this bag is set in post-war Belgium: the country was just rediscovering the arts, the theatres and everyday elegance. Women were stepping back into the rhythm of the city. What we love in this particular design is its special intention: Unlike the structured top handle bags very popular at the time, this piece was designed to be worn flat against the body, under the shoulder. It thereby allowed full freedom of movement, whilst also safeguarding any valuables - it is really a hand free bag. Hand free to hold the rail in one of the numerous busses travelling through the city then, hand free to study a theatre program or be with your loved one.
It's at this moment one can visually grasp how way ahead Delvaux is as always in its design thinking - even at this time close to 70 years ago - making timeless bags for modern women, when their independence was still a rolling stone.
